                    Itinerary (June-November)

Pick-up from Darwin city between 07:15 and 07:30 am.

Finniss River Crossing

Take the back roads from your Darwin hotel to the Finniss River and beyond. Stretch your legs at this shady riverside stop.

Maganbar

Across the Finniss River you’ll enter Tess's family's country. Maganbar is also known as Bamboo Creek, an area of great importance to Tess's family. Bamboo Creek is also the site of pioneer heritage, a tin mine worked in the 1940s and '50s.

Woolaning Spring

Woolaning Spring is Tess’s family's private land surrounde by Litchfield National Park. Tess's grandfather built a sawmill camp at this beautiful spot over 60 years ago. Here in nature's forest dining room, by crystal clear spring waters, you’ll enjoy a sumptuous lunch of local game meats flame grilled over a campfire.

Wangi Falls

After lunch you'll visit spectacular Wangi Falls, a popular dry season swimming spot and a special place for Aboriginal women. Cool off with a swim or explore the nearby rainforest, home to a restless colony of flying foxes.

Blyth Homestead on the Reynolds River Track

The 4WD-only Reynolds River Track and two creek crossings will lead you to heritage-listed Blyth Homestead. Tess's uncle Max Sargent and Aunty Esther grew up here in this tiny, rough-hewn homestead built about 1928. You’ll get a taste of life in the days of working mines and cattle, carving out a living in this rugged environment.

Florence Falls

No visit to Litchfield is complete without seeing Florence Falls from the plateau-top lookout. For the keen there is another opportunity for a refreshing dip in the clean, cool water of Florence Creek.

Batchelor

Stop for an ice cream in the pretty town of Batchelor, established in the 1950s to serve the nearby Rum Jungle mine and now home to the Batchelor Institute, focussing on the educational needs of indigenous youth.

Back to Darwin

Settle into the comfort of your air-conditioned Landcruiser as you return to your hotel in time to catch the sunset over Darwin Harbour, markets or nightlife.

                    Itinerary (December-May)

Pick-up from Darwin city between 07:15 and 07:30 am.

Return to Darwin approxinately 05:30 pm.

Fogg Dam

Take in views of expansive wetlands from the low dam wall. See a wide variety of waterbirds and lotus lilies, as well as the occasional crocodile and turtle, in soft morning light.

Adelaide River crocodile and birdlife cruise

See saltwater crocodiles and riverine birds in their natural habitat from the safety of a stable boat on the tropical, meandering Adelaide River. Be awe-struck as large crocodiles come right up to the boat for a feed, and raptors swoop for theirs.

Batchelor

Stop for a coffee and a quick look around the pretty town of Batchelor.

Wangi Falls

Visit spectacular Wangi Falls, a popular dry season swimming spot and a special place for Aboriginal women. The plunge pool id usually closed for swimming at this time of year but the waterfall is awesome and you can explore the nearby rainforest, home to a restless colony of flying foxes.

Tolmer Falls

Tolmer Falls is spectacular in the wet season as water cascades through rock arches before plunging into its deep forbidden gorge. A short walk around the top of the falls will introduce you to Litchfield's stone country as plants that have lain dormant through the dry spring to life.

Florence Falls

No visit to Litchfield is complete without seeing Florence Falls from the plateau-top lookout. You can have a refreshing dip in Florence Creek above the falls or, if you're keen, you can walk down into the gorge for a cool swim in the plunge pool.

Back to Darwin

Settle into the comfort of your air-conditioned Landcruiser as you return to your hotel in time to catch the sunset over Darwin Harbour, markets or nightlife.

Tropical summer

During our tropical summer, from about December to May, the authorities close some roads in the Top End because of floodwaters. Nevertheless this is a wonderful time for a day trip to the Litchfield area. Accessible waterfalls are in full and dramatic flow, the landscape is lush and vibrant, and clear, croc-free natural pools invite refreshing swims.
