Litchfield National Park is one of the premier natural attractions of Australia's Top End. Only an hour's drive from the Northern Territory capital of Darwin, Litchfield contains a series of stunning tropical waterfalls and swimming holes. The National Park was established in 1986 and is a very popular destination being so close to Darwin with over a quarter of a million visitors a year. The Park was named after Frederick Henry Litchfield who was a member of the Finniss Expedition from South Australia that began in 1864 in a bid to set up a settlement at the mouth of the Adelaide River.
Swimming in Litchfield also poses less of a threat from Crocodiles than other parks in the Northern Territory. Though please check with the National Parks Headquaters in Batchelor on the way through to Litchfield and always look for and heed any warning signs including Crocodile warning signs. Often there are friendly rangers at the bigger falls, tourist information centres and government websites for more accurate infomation. |
