Meet at your hotel
Meet your indigenous guide at your Darwin hotel to begin your day's experience of the best of the Northern Territory's Top End.
Crocodile and birdlife cruise on the Adelaide River
Get face to face with large saltwater crocodiles from the safety of of a 6 metre shaded boat on tidal reaches of the Adelaide River. See a variety of riverine birds and learn about their habits on this large, meandering tropical lowland river.
Territory Wildlife Park
Get a close up look at a wide range of Top End animals. Tess was a guide at this Territory icon for years and knows its residents first hand. She'll offer indigenous insights into the habits and origins of animals and traditional uses of plants you may never have imagined.
Woolaning Spring
Tess will take you along back roads, across the Finniss River, and into her family's country. You'll be exclusive visitors to beautiful Woolaning Spring and Tess's family heritage: the sawmill camp her grandfather built here 60 years ago. In nature's rainforest dining room, by crystal clear spring waters, you'll enjoy a sumptuous lunch of local game meats.
Litchfield waterfalls
After lunch you'll visit Wangi Falls, a popular dry season swimming spot and a special place for Aboriginal women. You can cool off with a swim or explore the nearby forest, a seasonal home to a restless colony of flying foxes. Later, short walks will reveal spectacular Florence Falls or the chasm of Tolmer Falls, where you'll get a close-up look at Litchfield's stone country and take in sweeping views over the lowlands.
Blyth Homestead on the Reynolds River Track
The Reynolds River Track and two creek crossings will lead you to heritage-listed Blyth Homestead. Tess's uncle Max Sargent and Aunty Esther grew up here in this tiny, rough-hewn homestead built about 1928. Let Tess paint you a word picture of life in the days of working tin mines and cattle to carve out a living in this rugged environment.
Back to Darwin
Settle back into the comfort of your air-conditioned LandCruiser as Tess returns you to Darwin in time to catch sunset over Darwin Harbour or the Mindil Beach Markets.
Wet season
From about December to May some roads in the Top End are closed by floodwaters. They include Litchfield Park Rd at the lower Finniss River crossing, the Reynolds River track to Blyth Homestead and beyond, and the track to Woolaning Spring. During this time we access Litchfield National Park via the pretty town of Batchelor. We can view Wangi Falls but they are closed for swimming due to dangerous waters and the threat of saltwater crocodiles entering the plunge pool. Despite these conditions this is a wonderful time to visit the Litchfield area. Waterfalls are in full and dramatic flow, the whole area is green and lush and alive, and you can usually swim at Buley Rockhole and Florence Falls in clean water without the dry season crowds.
